What it is and what it's for
The pulse oximeter non-invasively measures blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) through an optical sensor placed on the finger, earlobe or (in pediatric/neonatal) foot or wrist. It is the fifth vital sign — together with blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature — and the first to drop in respiratory failure, sepsis and shock. Form factors: portable fingertip (office spot check), tabletop (wards and observation), transport (ambulance, home care) and integrated module (patient monitor). Advanced reading technology (Masimo SET, Nellcor OxiMax) keeps readings reliable in cold, moving or low-perfusion patients — where a basic oximeter fails.

- Reading technology: Masimo SET or Nellcor OxiMax for cold, moving or low-perfusion patients — essential in ICU, transport and neonatal
- Form factor: fingertip (portable, screening), tabletop (ward), transport (ambulance, home care), module (integrated into a monitor)
- Sensor: disposable (critical care, infection control) vs. reusable (routine, lower cost per read)
- Sensor sizes: adult, pediatric, infant and neonatal — the same device should accept several
- Continuous SpO2 with configurable alarm for wards and step-down units (Manchester requires it)
- Battery ≥ 20h for transport and home care without an outlet
- Ambient-light and electrosurgical (Bovie) immunity — common in the OR
- Plethysmographic waveform on screen: validates the signal and flags a poorly placed sensor
- Export to EMR via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi

In the Blue contract, adult and pediatric sensors are in scope, preventive service schedules battery replacement before end of life and corrective response runs under SLA — the station is never without SpO2.
