Understand
The pulse oximeter non-invasively measures blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) through an optical sensor placed on the finger, earlobe or (in pediatric/neonatal) foot or wrist. It is the fifth vital sign — together with blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature — and the first to drop in respiratory failure, sepsis and shock. Form factors: portable fingertip (office spot check), tabletop (wards and observation), transport (ambulance, home care) and integrated module (patient monitor). Advanced reading technology (Masimo SET, Nellcor OxiMax) keeps readings reliable in cold, moving or low-perfusion patients — where a basic oximeter fails.
What's in the contract
A stopped oximeter means an unmeasured vital sign — respiratory failure, sepsis and ICU transfers are delayed. In the Blue contract, adult and pediatric sensors are in scope, preventive service schedules battery replacement before end of life and corrective response runs under SLA — the station is never without SpO2.
