Sterilizer

A stopped CSSD is a stopped OR — a contaminated instrument does not become a sterile instrument until the autoclave runs. Validation, consumables and maintenance SLA in the contract, no upfront cost.

Understand

What it is and what it's for

The sterilizer is the equipment that turns contaminated material into sterile, reusable material inside the CSSD (Central Sterile Services Department). Three technologies cover most hospital fleets: steam autoclave (moist heat — surgical instruments, textiles, heat-stable plastics), hydrogen peroxide sterilization (H2O2 gas or plasma — endoscopes, optics, heat-sensitive material) and washer-disinfector (enzymatic wash + thermal disinfection — mandatory pre-step before sterilization). Cycles follow ISO 17665/11607, with IQ/OQ/PQ validation and load release via biological, chemical and parametric indicators. Without a validated cycle, material does not reach the OR.

Applications

  • Central CSSD in hospitals and surgical centers
  • Decentralized CSSD in endoscopy, cath lab and OB suites
  • Day surgery, ambulatory surgery and dental clinics
  • Reprocessing of rigid instruments, optics and endoscopes
  • Rapid cycles for emergency reposition (flash) — restricted by standard
  • Third-party reprocessing labs and centers

What to evaluate when choosing

  • Pre-vacuum steam autoclave (Class B) for OR instrumentation — the "gold standard"
  • Gravity autoclave (Class N) only for solid, unwrapped material — restricted
  • H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) for flexible endoscopes, optics and heat-sensitive material
  • Washer-disinfector mandatory before sterilization
  • Double-door (barrier) chamber separates dirty from clean CSSD — infection control
  • Chamber volume in liters per cycle: size by weekly surgical volume, not by max load
  • Cycle logging system (printer + software) for traceability and audit
  • PW-quality water: treatment includes reverse osmosis and demineralization
  • Initial IQ/OQ/PQ validation and annual requalification — required by standard

What's in the contract

Equipment Subscription with operations included

A stopped autoclave blocks the entire OR — a contaminated instrument does not become sterile, elective surgery is rescheduled and urgent cases go into contingency. In the Blue contract, preventive service schedules gasket, filter and heating-element replacement before failure, corrective response runs under SLA, annual validation is performed by our clinical engineering team and critical consumables (biological and chemical indicators) are in scope — the CSSD does not become a mid-week parts quote.
