What it is and what it's for
The triage monitor — also called spot-check or vital signs monitor — measures the four parameters that drive risk classification in quick cycles: non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP), oximetry (SpO2), temperature and heart rate. Unlike an ICU patient monitor, it does not run continuous surveillance with prioritized alarms — it takes a point-in-time reading, prints or exports to the record and frees the station for the next patient. It is the baseline device for hospital triage (Manchester, ESI), urgent care and outpatient clinics: fast, portable and with reusable sensors.

What to evaluate when choosing
- Portable (battery + handle) vs. stationary (wheels + stand): triage prefers portable, wards prefer carts
- Color screen ≥ 5" readable from a distance — so the nurse can check without approaching
- NIBP with validated oscillometric technology (adult, pediatric, neonatal) and multiple cuff sizes included
- Masimo or Nellcor SpO2: reliable reading in cold, low-perfusion or moving patients
- Infrared (forehead/tympanic) or axillary/oral temperature — infrared is faster for high throughput
- Integrated thermal printer (optional) and EMR export via Wi-Fi/USB
- Battery ≥ 8h for stations that run a full shift without an outlet
- Cleaning: IPx1+ enclosure, sensors reusable with 70% alcohol
